Projects & Travels
of Hawelti e.V.
We guarantee that every cent of your donation will reach the people 100%. Here you can find out what we are currently working on and what we have already completed. You will also find information about what we have achieved or initiated during our travels. True to our motto: “Do good and talk about it”…
Project: Ethiopian Children's Books
Our Current Projects
What are our current priorities? What are we currently working on? Here you will find all information about our ongoing projects. We are also pleased about what we have already been able to move from "Ongoing to Completed Projects"...
Miniphänomenta
Children are the future of the country! They are enthusiastic, but often lack a vision for the future. Through learning experiments developed with them, teachers and parents, we want to rekindle their enthusiasm for learning and motivate them to learn for their own future.
To ProjectImmediate assistance
The civil war has taken everything from many people. Infrastructure and the social system remain in ruins. Many babies are severely malnourished and some are ill. Children and the elderly, especially those living alone, have no money for food. We are currently supporting these people through targeted fundraising campaigns.
To ProjectEthiopian Children’s Books
"Art of Buna" from Cologne has made it its mission to bring children's stories by Ethiopian authors, featuring Ethiopian tales in various Ethiopian languages, into schools, thereby motivating children to read and write. We are one of the first partners among the approximately 25 partners who now distribute these books to schools.
To ProjectWomen’s project “Selam”
During the two-year war in Tigray, many women became victims in various ways. Many are now left without an income. Wir haben 10 Frauen zu Imkerinnen ausgebildet und helfen Ihnen dabei, ohne Unterstützung die eigene Existenz, aber oft auch die der gesamten Familien sicherstellen zu können.

What we have worked on and what we have already completed
Not every project was successful. Nevertheless, with your donations we were able to
bring a sparkle to the eyes of many children and help many people in need in emergency situations;
we were part of wonderful art projects to raise awareness of the situation in Ethiopia.
We invite you to get an overview of what lies behind us.
Municipal project between the cities of Nuremberg and Aksum
This issue still saddens us deeply today! There was a great opportunity for municipal cooperation between Nuremberg and Aksum, with us acting as the "intermediary." This cooperation failed because of Ethiopians of a different ethnic group living in Nuremberg.
To ProjectCooperation with St. Mary Hospital in Aksum
We not only had equipment for a hospital, but also many ideas for helping the people of Aksum. However, we were unable to provide the necessary equipment, partly due to a lack of expertise. Nevertheless, we are working closely with the hospital, even without an ‘official cooperation agreement’.
To ProjectBeedabei ‘Set sail – Bremerhaven’
A spinning mill became a magnificent art project! On 17 August 2025, 246 yellow bee feeding stations were used to create a 25 x 30 m sailing ship for Sail in Bremerhaven. We were partners of the artists and donations are going to the ‘Selam’ project in Aksum.
To ProjectReverse Advent calendar (Nuremberg)
The idea is simple: each of us has several Advent calendars – but those in need on the streets or elderly people in their homes often have nothing. We wanted to implement an idea from Austria in Nuremberg. Unfortunately, this idea failed not because of a lack of support, but because of those we wanted to help.
To ProjectHawelti Mobile: Sewing Centre
We received 34 sewing machines as a donation in kind; these gave us ideas for training courses and starting businesses. Due to the pandemic and the war, we were unable to transport the machines to Aksum. Unfortunately, the long storage period caused damage, rendering the sewing machines unusable.
To ProjectNewspaper bags by and about refugees (Nuremberg)
The refugees brought with them many prejudices and fears of the unknown! So, shopping bags were made from newspapers, which were then decorated with a profile and the story of a refugee. Joint craft events were also held.
To ProjectCooperation with the association „Axum mental retardded and intelectual disabilities association”
Special encounters and people who have achieved incredible things! This involved people with mental and multiple disabilities. Although we were not professionally equipped to help, we wanted to create networks – unfortunately, we were unable to do so to the extent that would have been necessary.
To ProjectA school kitchen for the Hawelti School
Here, where it all ‘began’ in 2007, after building two toilet blocks, each with six toilets, in 2016/2017 we were able to build a school kitchen with a dining hall and two drinking water cisterns for the approximately 500 pupils and ensure a power supply as our first ‘major’ project for €100,000.
To ProjectStudents are building a school for students
Together with a project group from the Obermenzing Gymnasium in Munich, a school for 120 children was built in Endayesus near Aksum. What makes this project special is that the project group handled the planning and contributed the majority of the donations, while we primarily served as the local implementation partners.
To ProjectBeedabei – to set a (peace) sign
A project that still gives us goosebumps today! Together with the artist couple Beedabei from Nuremberg, we created a peace symbol in Aksum in 2024 using 25 bee feeding stations, to promote peace in Tigray and the world. And these 25 bee feeding stations were the beginning of our project "Selam"!!
To ProjectThe Megabit 18 school in Aksum
At this school, we participated in the construction of the science building and a water tank to improve hygiene (by enabling hand washing in the toilet areas). We were also able to donate 25 laptops and various other school books and materials.
To ProjectHawelti Mobil: Think and understand
The idea was a kind of "science center"—however, due to the lack of infrastructure, it's difficult for children to reach. That's why we wanted to bring a mobile science center to the children. After the war, however, the local people have other problems. Our idea remains, but will now be implemented as "Mini-Phänomenta."
To ProjectA school in May Berazyo
We hadn't originally planned to build another school. However, when we received a very generous donation for a school, we couldn't refuse. And so, a school for around 250 children was built in May Berazyo, who until then had been taught almost exclusively outdoors.
To ProjectOur Travels to Ethiopia
What we have worked on and what we have already completed
We want to learn from the people what they need;
we want to make sure that donations arrive where they are needed and don't
disappear somewhere; we want to ensure through visits that projects are successful in the long term.
Meanwhile, it has also become a visit to family and friends.
Join us on our travels and learn what we achieve and experience.
2025 – Thanks to many, we have once again been able to achieve a great deal!
At the beginning of our activities, things only happened in Aksum when we were there ourselves. This has changed a lot in recent years: we not only have 22 members in Aksum – they are also very active and do a lot – even when we are not there ourselves! That’s why we would like […] To Travel
2011 – A second donation will be transferred
After the first donation in 2009 we felt an enormous motivation to continue to be active for the Hawelti-school. In 2011 the next donation was with a further 1.800 €. With this second donation was built a second restroom with 8 cabines received 4 class rooms 4 glass windows and a section of the wall […] To Travel
2009 – Happiness about the toilets
Until 2009, Negassty Abraha gave the school personally 1.700 € coming from donations. This donation was originally created for a drinking fountain. However, the preliminary investigation, revealed that the ground water was not suitable for drinking and an additional water treatment is not financially viable. Therefore, with the donations of money, we decided to invest […] To Travel
2014 – In Axum: Contacts, conferences and support services
In March 2014 we were on the way to Axum with some money and ideas and visited the Hawelti-school. We wanted to have a fair impression about the situation in the field. In the package we also had some donations, which we handed Alemayoh Tekalgn, the school director: 750 Mechanical pencils School material, like “wrap-ups” […] To Travel
2024 – After Corona and war – We are finally back in Aksum!
Our last trip took place in February 2020; Corona in the world and the war in Tigray have kept us from visiting our families, friends and projects in and around Aksum. In June 2023, there was a first short trip by our chairman – but here there was only a first brief overview. So now […] To Travel
